Not having your period monthly suggests that you might not be ovulating. I wouldn't call that irregular periods, irregular periods happen every month but on a different day every months with cycles varying from 20 to maybe 35 days. If you are going without a period for months at a time it is not good. Are you not very healthy? overweight? smoker? things like that will cause you not to ovulate. If I were you I would pay a visit to the doctor and have some fertility tests done, that will tell you for sure how healthy, fertility wise, you are.

I tried with this problem for about 10years to get pregnant. Every doctor I saw told me I probably would not ever have a baby. I actually lost my first husband because of it. When my current husband and I got together we decided to try. I went to an awesome womens doctor, she sent me to an endocrinologist. He did a bunch of blood work and found out my testosterone was like 2 points to high (possibly from polycistic ovarian disease). Although thats not a lot, it still causes missed periods (sometimes only 1 per year) and also causes no ovulation and hair growth. He put me on spironolactone and birth control pills (to help regulate hormones) and told me to lose a lot of weight. I was 280 and lost down to 195. Im 6' so that was a good weight for me. Being very overweight messes with hormones a lot! After that I went off those two pills and started taking glucofage. Thats a medicine for diabetis, but the endicrinologist said having low blood sugar increses ovulation. I used those ovulation test kits (which really do work). Some times I ovulated, sometimes I didnt. I thought it was all for nothing but about 6 months later I found out I was pregnant. Now I have a beautiful 3yr old. After going off the meds I gained all the weight back but it was worth it. I tried to have another child last year but did not ovulate for 6 months and it became to depressing to try any more. Im now working on losing the weight again. But, whatever happens I still have my little girl.
I almost forgot, none of this is considered fertility treatment. So it is all covered by insurance!
I hope some of this helps you. I know its a depressing thing to go through. If you have any other questions that I might be able to help with on this subject feel free to e-mail me. Good luck!

Yes. You need to go talk with your OB/GYN about this and get tests done to see why you are irregular. It could be a hormonal problem or something else. Before you can get pregnant you need to find out what the problem is. I had to go on Clomid with all three of my kids because I was not ovulating at the right point in my cycle. Good Luck!

Go on a diet. Seriously, something about losing five pounds can turn the trick. It did for me twice. LOL
You could also go to GNC or another herbal type store and buy Vitex or Chaste Berry, the same thing. It helps to regulate periods and hormonal imbalances due to PMS. The stuff is awesome.
