Check your owner's manual - how often you should change it varies from model to model, so you should see what it says for your car specifically, because it can affect gas mileage and how well your car runs.

I dont know what type of filters these people are using but unless you use a K&N filter there is no way to clean an air filter. Most people blow them out but that just makes them worse. You can put holes in the filter when blowing them out. It all depends on what type of roads and the weather where you live. For example I live in michigan in the country. I have a lot of dirt roads so I have to change mine between 6000 and 12000 miles. If you are highway driving and not much dust probably anywhere from 12000-20000. The newer filters for the GM trucks seem to last a little longer they have more pleats and hold more dirt before becoming plugged.

I live in a place where there's a lot of sand on the roads in the winter, so my air filter gets pretty dirty every spring. I usually change it once a year. Changing an air filter is one of the easiest things you can do yourself, and it's pretty cheap. I guess it depends on where you live, but just keep your eye on it, and change it when it gets dirty.

9 times out of10the cost of a new air filter is under $20.00 so I change mine every 2 oil changes witch would be 6000 miles. Cleaning them is a bad Idea you can damage and clog them.

You need to have it cleaned every 6000 miles.
If it can't be cleaned then once every 15000 miles.
