I had work done at a speed shop and now my car has a coating on it that is gritty and very hard to remove. How do I clean it?

NO I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING, DO THEY DO PAINT WORK THERE AS WELL CAUSE IT SOUNDS LIKE OVERSPRAY, AND THE ONLY WAY TO REALLY REMOVE IT IS TO BUFF IT.

Nope. Auto shops do not use a protective coating on any cars before working on them. You'd be lucky if they put fender protectors on it which are just plastic and foam mats they drape over the fender to keep their dirty hands and clothes from making more work for them. I've seen some places put paper floor mats and seat covers in the car to keep it from getting dirty while working on it but even that is rare these days.

I am afraid the gritty coating you have on your car is probably from the shop using pneumatic impact wrenches nearby that have too much lubricant in them. This oily lubricant then sprays out onto your car binding any road grit already there to the car. Some shops aren't the cleanest either and could have blown their own filth on your car.

You simply need to wash your car correctly to remove the junk. A good rinse to start with removes the loose dusty grit. Then SPRAY on an automotive detergent. Really suds it up but don't scrub yet. This detergent will breakdown the oil film and carry away a good amount of grit with the next rinse. After the rinse, soap it up again but this time concentrate on a specific area of the car. Gently, and I mean gently, work the area with a very soft brush or cloth and avoid circular motions. This should get down to the surface of the top coat. Once it is clean, run your fingers over the surface with water. If it doesn't feel like slick glass, get yourself some detailiing clay and work the car over with that. I've found the detailing clay really leaves me with a smooth glossy surface that can't be beat. It pulls out any stubborn grit that's lodged in the top coat.

Finally, dry it and give it a good coat of wax. Everything you do should be in longitunal strokes and never circular. You should be very pleased with the results. I always use Mcquire brand products.

If it turns out the grit you are feeling still doesn't want to come off, I would have to assume you have paint overspray coming from a nearby paint gun. If that's the case, I would complain to the shop owner and contact my insurance company. Comprehensive insurance should cover such a thing and the shop should be willing to pay your deductible or maybe their insurance would cover the whole thing. Don't wait if this is what you think happened. The sooner you complain while the painting is going on, the better.

Good luck!
