Remove the words black and white from your vocabulary if you are talking about human beings. We're all various shades of brown- some lighter, some darker, some pinker, some yellower. There is no such thing as a person who is the color of Indian ink or any living person who is the color of the background on this page. Think in terms of beautiful instead and let stupid people say stupid things.

Do not be afraid of being called "white" or "black", be more afraid of "acting white or black, because that is when the stereotype comes in (as there is no acting white or black). The music we listen to or the way we may dress may cause others to "place" us in a category, resist this. In America, we tend to see only the surface of the person without seeing or attempting to understand the character of the human in front of us. Others have posted some good advice, be yourself, always.

I am a light complexion Black person - so I always got called names too. The best thing is to not take it seriously or let them see that it bothers you. You're new to an area and people will "try" you all the time. If you do have a nickname- share that info with them and ask that they call you by your given name or your nickname.
(Never let um see you sweat!)

Your always going to have issues in life, whether its a racial thing, not waering the coolest styles, or just being an outcast. So, don't let this bother you. Instead learn from it and make a difference. Help others like you feel welcomed and help educate people who make it an issue that they need to focus on soemthing else. Becuase people who focus on people being different are just bored and have low self-esteem themselves. Hang in there, this is just one more hurdle you are just going to over come through time!

Sorry honey but there is nothing you can do about ignorance. Most people have a set image in their heads and if you don't live up to it you aren't good enough well that is bullshit. If someone starts to say something to you just walk away people are going to be mean and hurtful. It's just sad that even inside your own race you can't feel comfortable yet others are screaming prejudice while prejudicing themselves.

My friend says it's because people in USA "think with their eyes" and determine what and who you are based on skin color. It's kind of like being gay; folks assume you're white and it's up to you to 'come out of the closet' and correct them. You could have some standard phrases to use (and be nice):
I know i seem to look white but i'm really black
I'm sorry, i'm not white, i just look white
Although i may appear white to you, i identify ethnically as african american.
I prefer to be viewed as black because of my family background.
Well, it could be some of my DNA is white but my soul/spirit is black.

You are in a role to educate people that from your point of view blackness is an ethnicity and inherent in who you are, not particularly related to your skin color. Good luck. The world needs to understand this lesson as well as you do.

i use to get very upset when people tried to figure out what i am because i could look like one of many races. i found out that it had built a prejudice in me I also started seeing the prejudice in them later so now i claim to be whatever they want me to be so that helps to fend off enemy thoughts ...they want to play a game so I play along with them i got over the prejudice that it had built by God placing people that i was prejudice against into my life in such ways to show me that they were people just the same as me and that they could do quite impressive things.

Try wearing a sign. Maybe one of those sandwich boards. And make sure you threaten the people who DO call you white, and tell them to tell their friends.

Sounds like you are well on your way to making new friends!
