There are many reasons, just as there are many reasons why countries go to war.

At best (relative terms), it is the last resort of a group of desperate individuals that cannot find another way to have their point of view expressed, either because they lack the attention of the others or because they are under such oppression that they are not given a chance to address their grievances. At worst, it can be a way for a group to bully others into adopting policies that are favorable to the group's ideals or beliefs. Failing that, a group may decide to simply eliminate what it perceives as its rivals through mass murders.

They can also be a group of idealists being manipulated to do the dirty work, thinking they are working toward some higher purpose when in fact they're working to benefit some personalities or parties whom they may not even be awared of.

A man once said that terrorism is the war of the poor and war is the terrorism of the wealthy.

If they had tons of money and cool uniforms and state of the art equipment they would be called a military unit.

During the American Revolution, people like Paul Revere were "terrorists". They were a small group of people who believed something different from the big military machine they decided to fight against.

Terrorists, by definition, are homegrown militia's without staggering tax dollars buying their equipment for them.

People who feel they are not heard when they speak, or ignored by larger more powerful groups of people follow a path of either fading away quietly or standing up for what they believe.

Think of teenagers and how terribly "rebellious" they can be. Of course that would be assuming that all teenagers are raised by healthy, normal functioning adult parents...which they are not.

By the way, regarding the American's reponse to the 9-11 terrorist attacks, did we ever try asking the terrorists WHY they did what they did? Did we try to speak with them and understand why they felt so strongly that our entire country had somehow harmed them before we invaded their countries? I don't remember hearing about a summit to try to find a peaceful solution to their greivances. Did you?

Let me put it this way- if we go bomb the crap out of another country, we call it "war". If someone else bombs the crap out of America, THEY call it war but we call it "terrorism."

It's subjective.

I would have to say that the lunatics who bomb women's clinics and shoot doctors who uphold a woman's right to control over her own body are Religious Terrorists. Wouldn't you? How are they any different from any other terrorist?

Because they want a certain objective, that can not be achieved through convential means, at least they think it can't be. Usualy they are a group or country that doesn't have the armed forces or the abillity to take on another country/group. They see violence as a way to achieve their objective and only through harming civilians, infrastructure, and even military targets a s way to get attention, spread fear among people and cause others to cave to their demands.

EX. Native American removal within the United States. The US did not have enough people to simply remove Native Americans from everywhere they wanted, so they attacked vilages massacring inhabitants, destroyed crops and buffalo, and even used biological warfare/small pox to sacre terrorize Native Americans to think they are no longer safe where they are and must move.

~George Bush allegedly to destroy weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Iraqi "insurgents" to defend and preserve their nation and to resist a foreign invasion.
Its's all a matter of perspective. A terrorist to one may be a patriot to another. For example, Americans consider the Minutemen to have been patriots, while George III rightly would have called them treasonist terrorists.
If you want politcal support, you label someone who takes a violent action in support of a cause a terrorist, will continuing to crush them under your heel. See the US and Osama Bin Laden, Britain and the IRA, Algeria and the FLN, Cambodia and the Khmer Rouge, Isreal and Yassar Arafat, etc. If, one the other hand, you support the action these people take or they are otherwise your allies, you call them patriots and freedom fighters. See the US and Osama bin Laden, the US and Ngo Dinh Diem, the US and the Shah, the Palestinians and Yassar Arafat, etc.

good question! i think there are probably as many answers to that question as there are terrorists...i think the "traditional" terrorist does not call it terrorism...it's religious fanatacism. Unfortunately, they believe what they are doing is right, and so that means they have to do it...they must be compelled by that to commit the acts we find so horrible. Maybe they have a reason to hate...they see corruptness and transfer that to all people of a certain race, religion, gender, nationality, etc...it's easy to say "i hate people like this, because someone like that did something bad to me..." or maybe they are more self-centered and like the sense of power or status, or control...

and then there are the people who never learned to value a human life...becuase they were never valued themselves...the cycle continues. it's sad. i think that all acts of terrorism are the unfortunate consequences of ignorance.

There is no such thing as a terrorist, simply someone of a different mindset to you, "terrorist" is just the name of someone who a certain culture deems to be acting against that given cultures goals and the means of which theyre allowed to acheive them, it is this misunderstanding that creates half the terror in the first place.

To put it bluntly, if a massive country was bombing the hell out of your house, im fairly sure you'd fight back.

As a desired means to a desired end. Terrorism is all about taking without having to ask. Coming to your own conclusions without ever having to take the time to think. I just said it in another question...I'll say it again. To understand the making of a terrorist watch movies like Munich and Syriana. There is an unfortunate human side to even their condition. It is an animalistic inbred nature and when humanity is broken or stressed due to fatigue, fear or social pressure (especially if you are being led and guided by a tyrant.) terrorism makes sense to them. It is action without thought fueled by a desire stronger than its own understanding. It is just as sad a condition as its outcome.

To gain negotiating power over their enemy so they may achieve what ever goal they happen to have.. This group of people are headed by men who wish power. They have some vision they see of themselves ruling vast portions of the earth. The only way they can force negotiation to gain this rule, is to use what we call terror to accomplish freightening civilians into wanting to negotiate.

What is it that Osama Bin Laden wants? He wants to rule a major portion of the world using fundamentalist Islam as both a religion and a political system. He does this by creating chaos and gaining enormous attention from the very population he wants to rule.

His hopes are simple, the population will call for the leaders to negotiate with Osama. This is exactly what Hitler did! He soon had enough power to attack the entire free world.

To get a lot of attention and to "terrorize" or scare everyone. It is an excuse for murderers to murder. Terrorists are very ignorant, even of their own Koran!!! They have no regard for Human Life.
