A month ago I bought some feeder goldfish to put in a fountain outside. The fountain gets a lot of sun but there is a plant for some shade. All the other goldfish have stayed the same color, except this one. When I bought it, it was a grey/black color all over. Now it is a light yellow with spots of grey. What could have caused this and is it normal?

that's normal, all goldfish start off that Grey color apart from odd albinos, as they get older they start to go there ornamental color.
the reason they have gone gold quicker is maybe your feeder pool heats up quicker due to the sun light and its making there metabolism speed up.

Goldfish bowls are banned in some European countries because they produce so much ammonia and get burned. If you wanted, you could experiment. Put the fish in a cycled tank with pristine water, or change their water 90% daily. Within a few days their fins and scales will turn black. The black indicates all of the areas on the outside of the fish that have been burned by ammonia and are healing in the good water. Their internal organs are also burnt. Yes, goldfish normally change color a few times in their lives. The first change is from their dull baby color to their juvinile color. Goldfish are born dull brown, black, silver, or bronze and change within a few months.

Until goldfish get 6 inches long they can change color. They all start out a brown color. Then they can change color or stay the same. Once they get 6" long the color that they are will be what they will be for the rest of their lives.

good responses so far. Also, too fast of running water can cause a goldfish to lose colour. Make sure there is a lot of oxygen in the water, and try using a color enhancing fish food.

I've had a few goldfish that started off gold, and for a short period of time, got black, and the black disappeared a few weeks later. I have yet to know what caused it, but it didn't seem to do any harm to my fish....she's still alive, and it's been almost a year now.

Goldfish scales will turn colors based on the light availability of the water.

It is simple, because when goldfish are born, they are not exactly gold. You probably bought a young gold fish, while it was still grey. Your fish will soon be a pretty golden/orangish color.
