Why are the food portions at restaurants here in the US so big compared to the rest of the world?

It IS true. You'd know this if you'd ever been OUT of the US.

Actually, it's quite true. There's several reasons- cultural expectations, epidemic obesity, but mostly I think it's because us Americans eat bad food at bad restaraunts. The food at someplace like Chillis or Cheesecake factory... Well, it sucks. A lot. It's awful, overcooked, oversalted, preprepared, mass produced, unmitigated crap. It wasn't fresh when it was frozen somewhere else, and it sure isn't fresh now. So how do those places make up for it? Huge portion size. If you go to a high end restaraunt (you know, one that has an actual trained chef) you generally dont get huge portion sizes. You get enough food not to be hungy, it's from local ingredients, it arrived fresh that morning, and was cooked specifically when ordered.
Most Americans simply dont have a very refined palate. That's partly due to fast food, partly because we dont cook at home, and partly because mass scale farming has rendered most ingredients completely tasteless.
I think if our food actually tasted like something, we'd all be much happier to have smaller portions. But instead we gorge on low quality bland food.

The majority of portions in the US are bigger, I would think, because of the same reasons why people buy large SUVs or bigger houses. It seems that if you get more then maybe its a better deal. It also may be that people want more and more.
Everything from food to cars to candy seems to be bigger these days. Just the other day I saw someone tooling around in his shiny new International SUV. This thing is enormous and I believe is based on their tractors used for the semi industry.

It's because we care about quantity, not quality. If you ask most Americans what they would prefer, they'll choose a huge portion of ok food over a small portion of delicious gourmet food anyday. It's a big problem, and it's definitely affecting our perception of what/how we should be eating.

because the food is cheaper than food in other country and they believe when quantity there is a lot of customer.
