ALL the below programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.

The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)
The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (www.spybot.info)
AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (www.spywareblaster.com)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.

These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.

The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

use www.microsoft.com and download windows defender, use antispy from yahoo as in the toolbar.yahoo.com available for free.
get to www.trendmicro.com and run an online scan other companies offer an onlinse scan see www.symantec.com and www.mcafee.com to name but three online scan engines.
you can download a free trial from mcaffee, and trendmicro.
i'd recommend as a total security package you use pc-cillin internet security from www.trendmicro.com

and yes trendmicro do an online scan beta for apple mac systems.
i use a windows system but hey each to there own. you failed to say what operating system your using so i provided you with my best experaince to date.

if your running windows vista folks turn off user account control if you think you have a virus or other spyware or your antivirus will find it and delete it but your system will restore the deleted file up on a restart. also you need to create a new restore point after a system clean and then delete all previous restore points.

Hi,

I have been using two softwares:
(1) Adaware
(2) Spybot - Search and Destroy

You can get these free of cost by seaqrching for them on google.com.

Warning: Since these are third party softwares, I do not take any guarantee for them. I have been using them since 3 years and it has worked without problems.

Cheers,
Manish
