We have HUGE problems with them here in Fayetteville, Arkansas. I suggest that you fill a spray bottle with 1 tsp Dawn dishwashing detergent and water. Then, spray the plant(s) you wish to protect every few weeks. It keeps the beetles from being able to latch on and eat. I do it all the time and have no problems at all. You can also purchase pheromone bags at Wal-Mart, HOWEVER do NOT place them anywhere NEAR the plants you wish to protect, otherwise you just draw the beetles toward the plants and they devour them. I prefer Dawn and water.

I have been dealing with these nasty Rose consuming vultures
for several years. Here is what I did this year, in the Spring I scattered Milk Spore in the flower beds. You are supposed to do this in the Fall and Spring. I had not seen any until this weekend
and though the #'s of them were very few, I sprayed with a Rose and Flower spray I think it's manufactured by Ortho I purchased at the hardware store. So far no beetles,. The spray needs to be applied every 2 weeks. But the Milk Spore certainly did help... Good Luck

Japanese Beetles come from your soil. If you treat your soil to get rid of lawn grubs, you are killing the larval stage from which the beetles mature. There are organic products that you spray on your lawn that will kill the grubs.I've never heard that Dawn and water keeps the beetles off plants, but I'm all for any organic method of protecting plants. I also plant garlic around my roses, that helps to deter the grubs. I hand pick the beetles. I kinda scoot them into a milk jug filled with soap and water, where they will drown. The narrow opening prevents them from flying out and makes it easy to capture them.

I bought Malthione poison concentrate ($10) and a 2 gallon pressure sprayer from Home Depot ($25). I sprayed that on the siding on the outside of toe house and around windows and doors, and that has solved my problem... they were coming in everywhere and I was vacuuming up to 300 per day!!! Now I have none!
I have also been told the herb thyme is an effective deterrant, but I have not tried it.

I have tried the water dish soap didn't work for me. I have alot of roses that they will strip in a day . So I use Sevin its a spray that you can get at home depot, lowe,s wal mart ect. It does work very well. And DO NOT get the beetle traps those things are horrid. I tried them one season and I have 20 times more beetles then I usually do. Those things just attract them into your yard. if your going to use a trap hang it in the neighbors yard and send them over their! :)
