I'm surrounded by people in my life who claim to be happy but deep down inside feel depressed and lost. I wish I had some sort of role model of "happiness" to give me an idea how to truely attain it.
Are you truely happy in your life? - the kind of happiness that is clearly not materialism and what society expects you to have to be happy. ...ie. lots of money, a house, spouse, baby. etc. If so how did you find it? Also how do you maintain it?

Carolyne,

Yes, I'm happy with my life with respect to contentment and the level of life style I've come to maintain. You're right in that true happiness is not about the material things you acquire in life but rather the inner peace and satisfaction you attain. For me, this has been in large part due to both my low maintenance life style and the desire to help others. I'm not a person who places great value in material things though I do respect the need for positive financial planning. Also, I derive a great deal of self satisfaction from being able to help others when I'm physically, mentally and/or financially able to do so. For me, the satisfaction I derive from helping others boosts my own self confidence and beliefs in that I'm living an honest, compassionate and stable life and those things when combined leave me feeling both happy and fulfilled.
I realize that having the ability to help others often requires greater financial security than those you wish to help and I've attained this in life by following two simple rules. First, to attain financial stability you must truly love and enjoy what you do as opposed to making the amount of money you earn your first priority. The reason being, if you truly love what you do then you're more likely to be good at that and we all know that those who are best at what they do soon become the best paid for doing that job. Secondly, the business world is a people business and is always subect to the full breadth of human emotions and judgements. So rule #2 for me has been, regardless of what I thought about others or the way they may have conducted themselves in business, to never allow those people to know how I felt if they either directly or indirectly could impact my financial earnings. In short, never burn bridges in business dealings.

The real secret for me was spiritual. I had been raised Catholic, then converted to Baptist, for years was unfulfilled. While working in various high paying jobs, felt unfulfilled; long term relationships, unfulfilled; great living quarters, unfulfilled.

I was approached by a Jehovah's Witness about a bible study. Skeptical at first, I found a spiritual home. It was a lot more work than either Catholic and Baptist, but it made sense. I had heard all types of stories about them and I was leary, but, soon afterward, met the man of my dreams also a Jehovah's Witness, since we were evenly yoked we discussed marriage and I inherited a spacious home, then began working on my Home Business (designing and creating jewelry). I have two cats and a dog and we are very happy.

During my busy schedule, I am happy to say that I am still studying and putting what I learn into action in my life. I have yet to become baptised, but learning the scripture among people who are tirelessly researching and applying what they know is a great feeling. We do not judge, we are mocked by others, but we do not have the convoluted problems others have because we live, loving others and helping them find their spiritual freedom. How much more successful can you be. No problems, no financial worries, no lonliness and all the love one person could stand.

I maintain it through a lot of time management, throwing away activities that do not bring me rewards, such as watching television for 4-6 hrs, emotional volleyball, obsessing on money.

Without concentrating on success you will definitely gain it as well as an understanding on how to simplify your life.

Happiness means different things to different people. If money makes you happy, Persue a good paying job. This of course means many years of schooling. Nothing is for free so be prepared to work for it. As for a spouse, set your standards and don't rush it. Life is about choice so choose well. This month I'll be married 25 years. A good paying job. A beautiful daughter that just finished collage. Happy? Oh yes. House, cottage and a wonder full family to share my life with. Now it's your turn. Remember, the destination is not as exciting as the journey.

I've been told that happiness isn't something you obtain. Everyone already has it. Happiness is a way of living. Now, I'm not sure how ppl manage to live happily, because i honestly don't think i do. Maybe everyone should just stop looking for happiness and it will find us. Its a hard world to feel happy about, but i don't think happiness relies on everything being perfect. Live daily, and don't stress about the future or the past and that will remove a lot too be unhappy about.

I am very happy, but I have never met anyone who is 100% satisfied with their life. I got my education, have an OK job, married and has 2 kids. I am happy most of the time, but there is always that time when I wish I had done something differently. Still need to make money and get a nice house.

I found a good husband "guess I was lucky"..... I love my kids, we all all healthy which is one main factor in our happiness, and we get along very well "most of the time" hhhhhh to maintain it, you just have to stay on top of things and always think as a team instead of being selfish.

First, don't be concerned with what it is that society or your friends think is important. You need to learn yourself and learn what's truly important to you. Learn to look at yourself honestly and love yourself for who you are, faults and all. When you figure out what makes you happy, then no matter where you go or what you do, you'll be happy. When others come into your life, they'll be able to add to your happiness... lose the ones that detract from your happiness.

i think that you need to just take it a day at a time. To be honest, exercise and you will just feel good about yourself. everything else will then just fall into place. Everything happens for a reason, you can control your health and when you feel good about yourself you will feel on top of the world.. i did it when i was depressed and i swear i feel great and the rest just happend.. i am in love now and just take it one day at a time. enjoy life, so find a good friend and go to the gym, stay active and happy. :)

Good Luck.. life is to short.. have fun!
