I recommend you read "Where Am I?" by Daniel Dennett. It's an excellent short story that explores the concept of self and whether it is attached to the brain or the body. It starts by exploring the "brain in a vat" scenario, but takes it a lot further in some very interesting directions.

Personally, I'm not sure where I stand on the issue, but I doubt that the mind/soul/self keeps living after the body dies.

The mind is connected to the body. If your looking for what leads us in the afterlife, We would say its our soul. Which has been with us before our minds, and before we were born. If your wondering how does somethin exist before nothing. Look at the Big Bang which came eventually from nothing.

No--mind and body are inseparable. Out of body experiences are hallucinations caused by substance abuse, oxygen deprivation, or the body's biological responses to stress.
