I know that they are vertical chalk mines (not quarries). But I'd like to know what they mined as I know it was not chalk. Any websites would be nice! Thanks.

They are called deneholes and they were mined for the flint in the chalk to make tools with there are lots of them in Kent (where i come from) because it is very chalky here.

I that specifically this name applies to the Daneholes, Thurrock, Essex, UK. Mined in neolithic times for flint not chalk, flint being found in chalk deposits. The most famous UK flint mines are in Suffolk at "Grimes Graves" near Thetford. See various websites. .
