Some of my personal favorites include:

Tenchi Muyo, Ranma 1/2, El Hazard, & Magical Knights Rayearth.

It all depends on which series you've seen so far that you liked the best. What type of thing usually appeals to you?

Is there a particul art style or theme you prefer?

I also highly recommend one time films by Miazaki [not sure if I spelled that right, but there you go] such as:

Howl's Moving Castle
Spirited Away
Kiki's Delivery Service
& My Neighbor Totoro

He's considered to be a grand master, and I've always loved everything he's done. There are more films by him, these are just my favorites.

Try this blast from the past: Uchuu Senkan Yamato (Starblazers). It's a bit dated (your parents will probably recognize it from their childhood), but you'll be amazed by now well it holds up. If you like FMA, I assume you like human drama. There's a good bit of that in the story. Who knows, it might even help you bond with your parents. Me and my dad actually did a little bonding over that show. I think a true anime fan (which I don't consider myself to be, but oh well...) should have some familiarity with this classic that both fans and non-fans of anime both seem to enjoy.

Well, selfishly, I would recommend Kaidomaru. Graphically this is one of the most interesting animes I have seen for some time. I say selfishly because I was one of the voices on that movie. Several actually.

Here is a good site for you...http://www.animenewsnetwork.com
Virus is another good series.

Hope that helps.

Ghost in the Shell.

and FLCL (Fooly Cooly) is nice and short, but weirdly addicting.

Lupin the Third is humorous.
