Your question is complete. An Athlon what? X2? 64? FX?
It's like you're asking what's the difference between a Ford and a Chevy. They are both cars, they both do the same thing for you, One might have a few fewer bells but more whistles than the other. Which is best depends on what you are doing with it.

Also, a duo is a dual core processor. An AMD Athlon X2 is a dual core processor. Then which is faster depends on a variety of factors. For a comparison of the TOP AMD and Intel Dual Core processors:

It doesn't even matter the difference, go with AMD. (for now) The Core duo is just a space filler, so that Intel doesn't completely drop out of the multi-core race. It runs only slightly faster than the low end AMD dual cores, but its features are near non-existant, and it is supported by very few boards. Your best bet is to stick with AMD 64 series, preferably the X2 or FX line. They're dollar-for-dollar the best buy, and come with so much more capability than the Duo line. In fact, Dell bought out Aleinware just so that they could use the AMD.
>>btw... the difference between the AMD Athlon (not x2/fx), and the Intel Core Duo, is that the Athlon is a single core.<<

Intel Duo is the better of the two processors... but as of yet this year is only available if you buy a new Intel Based Macintosh computer (iMac, Macbook, Macbook Pro, or Mac Mini)
