One way that cloning is practical (from a research point of view) is that using cloned organisms for research would eliminate unforeseen variables which may affect your results. If every wheat plant used to test the effectiveness of a new fertilizer is an exact genetic copy of the next, then any data gathered should contain the pure results of the fertilizer being tested--not false results from a genetic mutation or genetic drift in the wheat plants. In other words, cloning would help researchers by giving them better data from their investigations - which could help all living things by speeding up the approval process of the agency in charge of that field of study.

Suppose you have an injury or disease which can be corrected only if the exact replica is supplied, wouldn't a clone help ? Note that this clone would only be a few cells in a petri dish which would be grown from stem cells and not a full blown copy.

Well just for starters you could clone organs for testing instead of killing the animal or person. Also you could clone the organs for transplants without having to wait for someone to die and donate it.
