now. if you keep waiting for new technology, you'll never get one. when the newest tech is released, these tech co's are already planning the release of the next big thing they have already developed. the public gets technology, i think, two or three levels below what is actually cutting edge. we are just getting dual core processors, multi core processors have been used for years. we won't get multicore til 07. anyway, if you want a real gamer that will stand the test of time (say up to 2 yrs), its going to cost alot. a fully decked out desktop with dual dual core amd 64's, 2 nasty vid cards and blinding speed was north of $10k through alienware. and then there's the monitor. with that setup, any monitor under $3k will kill the performance.

Definatly wait untill the end of this year or beginning of next year as ATI and nVidia will be releasing their directx 10 cards with shader model 4.0 by the end of this year and MS will be releasing windows Vista at beginning of 2007 and that will be the only operating system with directx 10 support.

Wait.... AMD is on the brink of releasing their new socket 939 boards, and once they do, Intel will be forced to release the LGA775 chip (not the board), which will make all the current X2, FX, and D, and Duo chipsets drop inprice dramatically. (we are talking within the next 2 months)

Inevitably, technology will change and get better.. so wait next year and you'll be asking the same question.
What is interesting now is that dual-core technology is readily available so you will be stepping into multi-core technology right away.

Wait 'til you're desperate for one... The companies always say don't wait, but that's just so you buy more computers. Wait until VIsta comes out, you could save $$$ that way.
