I assume that the speed he generates when he jumps into the air allows his to overcome fdrag and his denser molecular structure reduces wind reisitance to nothing.

Otherwise, where does the propulsion come to compensate for drag and gravity?

His will. Just like Green lantern's powers are limited by his will, Superman's ability overcome gravity is not so hard to understand, what is hard to understand is how he can fly in outer space where there is nothing to hold on to.Propulsion is the deal there. While in outer space he can go from a steady 0 to 100 in .01 seconds without having the need for inertia, friction or a place to jump from, for our standards of physics, that is impossible.
Now that's what I call a will of his own

DC comics never answer that question except to say that he "flies by will alone".

Will is not something that affects gravity or air. Therefore some mechanism in Superman, responding to Will, does it for him.

But that mechanism is never revealed.
