Antonio Carlos Jobim, Brazil's most famous and most loved composer wrote the melody for Girl from Ipanema. Vincius de Moraes wrote the Portugese lyrics and Norman Gimbel wrote the English words The original version, with Jobim playing piano, Joao Gilberto on guitar (and singing in Portugese), and Astrid Gilberto singing in English is the all-time best version. Her voice is amazing, vibrato-free singing that conveys the Samba mood.
Btw - there actually is a Girl From Ipanema, which is well known beach outside of Rio de Janeiro. Both Jobim and Gilberto commented on how breathtakingly beautiful she was - and everyone in that area knows who she is (she's in her 60s).
