Orange sticks are used in manicures. They are slim sticks with tapered end that can be used to push back cuticles and remove detritus from under the nail and around the nail bed. But why are they called "orange sticks"? They're not orange coloured and I don't think they're made from the wood of an orange tree.
Thanks.

They aren't made from the wood of the orange tree anymore, but they used to be. The name is just a hold over from that time. like how we still say dial when we use the phone, even though there is no more dial.

They used to be made from orange wood, but old habits die hard & we still call them orange sticks.

the freedictionary.com has the following definition:

orange stick
n.
A stick of orangewood with tapered ends, used in manicuring.

this must be the reason for it's name, though I never knew this before today :)
