I hear people using profanity in public everyday and find it very offensive. I hate to have to listen to their gutter talk and they seem to have no regards to any children around them. I think profanity is a sign of being low classed or trying act lowclassed. Why must everyone curse and use the f-word all the time?

Ok in defense of freedom of speech, that would have to include the right of people to make racial slurs because after all it IS freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is important but like anything in life, there has to be some limits to keep people from abusing it.

The use of profanity while being used as a filler or to be cool just simply shows the uncultured and uneducated status of those who use it. If you've every spoken with an older Briton who is angry they can curse you out without uttering any profanity. Unfortunately this is a sign of the times here in America. Where else would so called human beings show up to protest a soldiers furneral? Where else do criminals get more freedoms than their victims? We are facing a collapse of morality and personal dignity in America and while I love this country and have sworn to defend it I'm appalled when I see society acting as it has over the past 20 years. It's no wonder that the Muslim's in the middle east look at us as corrupting devils. Indeed if we step back and look at ourselves from the outside world we might be inclined to draw the same conclusion. When children (incapable, morally inept, and uncaring adults) are raising the children this is what you get.

Well, actually if you want to get technical, Freedom of Speech does protect ethnic slurs. I don't know of anyone being arrested for using an ethnic slur. I agree, it is a matter of being inconsiderate and I always try to watch my mouth in public, especially around children. I also found this rather disturbing conclusion in your statement: If profanity is a sign of being low classed and you think using profanity should be a punishable offense, then you must think that being low class should be a punishable offense. I certainly hope you worded this wrong.
No, I don't think it should be punishable. It is protected and it just shows someones inconsiderate behavior. It is up to the rest of us to teach the children what is right and wrong because apparently, their parents never did so for them.

Ever heard of the first ammendment?? Profanity does have a place to be used, and it can be overused. And as for sounding lower-classed, what makes you better than a bum you see sleeping on the street? I bet you have never had to work a day in your life, and you have always had everything handed to you. Grow up. I am so sick and tired of the "political correctness"; people need to get a life and quit worrying about who said what or how it might be offensive to someone else. What's this world coming to?? We might as well roll over and sing kumbaya. So no, punishing someone for his or use of curse words is a direct violation of one of our civil liberties. They are already trying to take away our rights as citizens, don't help them along.

I think the best thing for you to do is to not be around people who constanly use profanity. You can't change the entire public, but you can change who your friends are.

Btw, cursing, for me, is just an expression of frustration. I am not trying to sound civilized and high-classed, I am just saying the words that describe how I feel. Sorry, but "Gosh dangit" doesn't cover what I'm feeling all the time.

I dont think it shoud be a punishable offense because we have already given the Govt. enough control over us. Fortunatley, we do have the freedom to speak freely. What you need to do is just simply have the guts to say something when others are profane. I can ussually tolerate it to a point, but if my children are around, i WILL say something.

Freedom of speech also allows for the freedom to be ignored. Try not to hate others for excercising their right to free speech, when at the same time, be the bigger person and try not to respond to such negativity. Take care!

No, there's only so many rights a government can strip away from their people before their people get really really angry. You and everyone else have to learn to live with things they don't like, it's called living in a society.

its a lack of vocabulary. surerly, when u talk and your mind goes blank you must fill the void. so people do it with curses..... sort of to catch their breath in between whatever they say. i think that since freedom of expression is valid in usa a law would never be passed prohibiting profanity in public.
