My mare is pregnant due in about 4 days. Not sure if it is going to be a colt or a filly (a boy or a girl). Any names?

For me, a horse's name should fit his/her personality or it's station on our place. I raise registered Tennessee Walkers. My "main" mare is a mirror image of my stallion. Her registered name is Spirits Touch of Class, but we call her Bookend, because she is marked exactly like my stallion. I have a 4 month old filly whose registered name is Texas Midnight Sky. I call her Little Sister or Sissy. She has a full blood older brother that she is almost inseparable from. Those are 2 examples of how I come up with my names.

I never name an animal, horse or dog or cat, until I have a week or so to get to know them. Then, I try out the name. If it sticks then that's it. But, sometimes the name just doesn't work out, so I keep at it until I come up with one that fits.

I recommend you take your time in naming your new baby. There really isn't a hurry. You can call it "the baby" for a while. Everyone will know who you are talking about. Give yourself time to come up with the right name.

Its late in the year to be foaling if she is a registered horse. But if not its OK .What dominate breed is your horse? Is she more quarter horse or mustang or what? That makes a difference in names sometimes, But common names are Flica for a filly and Champ for a colt for grade horses . Have fun with your new baby.

I like to wait and see what kind of personality the colt has, then I pick a nickname for it. Then when I register it, I work the nickname into the registered name. That makes it easier to remember what the colt's registered name is. It's important to remember what it's real name is because when you have to pull hair for DNA testing, you have to be sure you have the right horse.
I have a full sister and brother named "Time" and "Tell", I'm hoping for a full brother next that I can name "Will"! LOL. Have fun with it.

Envy if its a filly or a colt because I envy you having horses!
Serenity for a filly like I named my dog after my fav show,
names are important it may rub off on her personality.
Firefly if its a colt also my fav show, the same show a different season actually.

Why not name them just what they are? Colt for a boy and Filly for a girl. Seems natural and cute.

And my personal favorite:

(He had a strange owner?)

I would look at what your mare passport/breeding record and try to pick something that identifys her bloodlines and tie that in with one of the stallions names.

Then that way if you advertise the foal to sell or you go on to compete on it, people can identify that your horse is of 'good stock'

As for a stable name, I normally name my horses in alphabetacal order depending on year and I look at the baby's name books or name the horse after any of my family's recent arrivals and look at a variation of their name.
