Sometimes they have underlying meaning... But it really depends on what you believe in. If something happened during the day that was somehow exciting to you or caught your attention than your brain holds on to the thought for most of the day whether you recognize it or not. While you sleep, part of the day may come back with an extra odd twist or unrealistic plot... Either that or some people dream about what they long for the very most.

Yes, dreams can have a meaning. And No, dreams don't always have the meanings we think they have. It's like this: every thing you see, feel, think or experience in any way gets stored in your subconscious mind. The things that make sense and are acceptable to your active thinking get processed the normal, conscious way. The pieces that don't really fit in your conscious thinking will probably come back as dreams. There's been a lot of research on dreaming. Some people say that they have dreams that tell the future, but that is impossible. What is possible is that a person can have all the information that they need to know what is going to happen next in their lives, but they can't understand it consciously, so their dreaming minds put the pieces together for them and it looks just like they have had a dream that predicts the future. A lot of men- me included- have dreams about sex. Not just any sex, but the kind of sexual encounters that we don't let ourselves think about while we're awake. It doesn't mean anything except that you have unexpressed desires. There are plenty of desires that you can't really act on except in dreams. In simple terms, what happens in your dreams is what is happening in the back of your mind. Sometimes it's meaningful, sometimes you should just look at it and let it go. Some people find it useful to keep a "dream journal". You write down the details of your dreams as soon as possible after waking up, before you start to forget. Re-read them later and find out what they mean to you, but always remember that the meaning in dreams is psychological meaning and nothing else. Enjoy your brain. No matter what it thinks, your brain works for you- you always choose what to act upon and what to ignore, what means something and what is just a bit a silliness.

Meaning is relative. Is my dream relavant to my immediate life? To my past life? Is there an emotion or feeling that I have yet to acknowledge, that requires my attention and respect? Perhaps my dream has more to do with what I had for supper than anything I may be feeling. The answer to the question Do dreams have meaning?, is as varied and many as the answer to the question What is life? The response can only be subjective, since there is no way in which to scientifically measure dream content, value, and the like, and since variables like culture, religion, ideology, social and economic status also effect how we process our experiences and the information we consume. So on the off chance that all of those elements are relevant to dreams, then, once again, meaning can only be subjective.

Dreams are scientifically just neural-firings when your body is unconscious in a dream-state. It does not mean anything. It is simply your brain trying attach images and meaning to these random neural-firings. However, since your brain will most likely attach ideas that are readily available to it, the ideas will most likely be things that are already in your subconscious. For instance, if you have been feeling stressed out lately, your dreams may reflect that tone of fear or frustration. If you are happy, your dreams may be happier. But your dreams mean nothing more than that. Just a glimpse into your state of mind. They do not predict the future or tell you deep dark secrets about yourself.

Yeah dreams have a meaning. Its just hard to decipher them because most of the time we dont remember enough details to give actual meaning to the dreams.

Hi Victor,
Yes, many dreams that we have are significant, and they can have different purposes. I encourage people to write down their dreams as soon as they wake up. Some dreams may have great significance to our lives once we understand them. Dreams can help explain our destiny, point out areas of our lives that need correction, encourage us, give direction, tell us about future events, provide warnings... Some very famous compositions, inventions, and other creations actually came to people in dreams.

Only if you want them to.Dreams are simply a way for your brain to file information you received that day.In your dream state, your brain will file everything it understood that day and file it.It will file images and thoughts tagged together with similar files for easy recall. This is why your dream is like a movie but it will jump to different thoughts and memories are filed. This also explains when you hear a song from a long time ago,you can remember where you were, its all tagged and filed for easy recall.

Dreams usally come from the things you do in life, some people have dreams that mean something, like the ones sent from our creator, but most are just from things that one does in their life.

I believe they do. However, I don't think they "tell the future." I think they're your mind's interpretation of what's going on in your life, with a lot of wishful thinking. Like if you're kissing somebody you really like... That's not your future. It's what you'd like to happen in the future. To me, dreams are your mind's way to digest and just pretty much figure out the meaning of what's going on. An analysis of your day-to-day life, if you will.
