It depends on the particular shoes purpose. I love Nike for basketball and just wearing them around.
I think Addidas have great running shoes. They are cheaper then Nikes running shoes and provide better comfort.
Nikes have a tough soul thats made for the grind of the court not for never ending abuse while running constantly.

Adidas is better if you are looking for a running shoe with great stability.
Nike is good for everything, I love them.

ADIDAS for the skateboarding rocker type, NIKE for the preppy sport loving type. At least, thats how it is around here.

They are both about the same quality. Both are (in my opinion) overpriced and you're paying for the label.
Different brands are shaped to fit different feet. For example if you have really narrow heels, one brand may on average fit you better than the other big name brands.
