I have an older computer but desperately need a new one. I will primarily use it to edit video so I need a CPU that has good storage and will allow me to edit without constantly dropping frames and other headaches like that. I am willing to spend about 800 up to 1 grand. Can anyone recommend something for me? Thanks so much!

You are going to have some trouble in that price range finding a computer capable of being a full time editing machine. I say that not to discourage you, but to let you know upfront you are going to have to make some sacrifices. First off you need to think about what types of video you are going to be making. If you are going with basic home movies and just want to burn it to dvd to give it to your friends then the answer is simple get a Mac mini and upgrade it with the most ram you can get, a DVD burner and an external firewire hard drive. That should be well under a thousand dollars. I-life comes with i-movie and i-DVD wich are very powerful programs for the amature user, and are easy to use.

If you want to do more with it, then look at getting Final Cut DV which is a simpler version of Final Cut pro, at a reduced price.

If you want to go for a pc get a media center PC, but buy a version of xp pro and install it. Something in media center causes a problem with some editing software. (this is in my experience, but it might be a problem in the way the computer was set up. anyway I never figured it out.)

For a thousand dollars you can't get professional editing software (Well you can, but you get just the basics.) let alone a computer. If you are looking to go pro you will need at least 4 grand worth of equipment. (You can start out with a machine, then add software, then add a titler, then add after effects, then add etc. to spread the cost out over time. Or you could save your pennies and get a Mac all at once.)

Hope that helps,
Tony

When it comes to video editing and movie editing, the following are important criteria for any computer to be used:

1. Bus speed
2. Amount of RAM, at least 1GB.
3. Lots of hard drive space in excess of 200GB.
4. Lots of video memory on the video card itself. Avoid integrated video that "shares" system RAM for its video memory.
5. As much "cache" as possible on the CPU. AMD64 processors tend to be "king" these days. Avoid Celeron processors.
6. Multi-channeled sound card.

In summary, I recommend a Mac. From the start they've been the best for audio and video editing. The new Duo Core systems are great! I own a Mac Mini that I use.

Well, for a good computer backed by a reputable company? Not really. If you want, build your own computer. That's your best bet for a good computer that can edit movies and video in the $800 to $1000 price range.
The problem with buying a pre-made computer from a company is that they are usually set up to check email, surf the web, and play video games. Not edit movies and video.

www.newegg.com is the best service for price and speed when ordering new computer parts.

Be more concerned with the Specs than the brand, Mike.

For Video\Photo work you will need plenty of RAM 1 Gig+ and a fast processor. Large HDD @ 7200+ RPM will help.
Find a tech in your area who knows what he is talking about and ask if he will configure your PC for Video editing. eg Minimal background tasks. Forcing PGM's to operate in virtual RAM etc.

Hope I helped
