I've been answering questions for a few days now and I just realized that I'm racking up the points. What are the points for? Are they simply a system that's used to allow people to ask questions? Or are they for something else?

It is simple..... it is made to be addicitive. It is a way for us to have fun while learning and asking. If you are not aware of this I added a link below. It takes you to the point table. This explains everything you may or may not already know.

They're just a way to have pointless ranking so that people will continue to go on and answer people's questions. It's just for motivation.

points five you levels, and higher level allows you to answer more questions per day.
