India was probably the richest nation.

China was far and away the most wealthy country until just recently (in historic times). From the fall of the Roman Empire until the rise of the British Empire, there would have been few countries that could compete- Perhaps the mongol empire at it's peak (though that wasn't a true nation) or the Byzantine empire at various times-but China would have consistently been the wealthiest over time, between the Roman Empire and modern day.
*edit* of the New World nations, only the Incas had a large geographical area and a significant population, but never did the entire population of S America approach China-and never did it come near the technology, complex governmental system, world exploration, language, etc etc, of the Chinese- Also, the each of the American cultures listed had relatively short spans of existence.
*edit2* If you go back further in time, the Mesopotamian kingdoms and the Egyptians from about 5000-1500 BCE would have traded the title back and forth- Then the Persians for a period, then Greeks and Phoenecians (with the Minoans thrown in somewhere there)- But the Romans had wealth and power unequaled to that day, and rarely matched even in modern times- At it's peak, the Roman Empire contained 10's of millions of relatively wealthy citizens. Egypt, even at it's peak, had not 10% of that population-the majority poor. The building of the pyramids did not require great wealth, but slave *and* volunteer labor. After the Roman Empire fell (around 450 AD), the Chinese held the title as richest *nation*- The mongols took over China, most of present day Russia, Persia, and a portion of Europe- but it never was a *nation* per se, and it fell within a short time. The Chinese, with that Mongol portion deleted, were the wealthiest nation from around 450 AD until probably into the 1700's, and perhaps even into the early 1800's.
Just as an interesting side note, the Mongol Empire still holds the title as the largest empire that ever existed-Larger even than the USSR or either the Spanish or British Empires.
