Latitude & longitude is an angular distance measured in degrees, minutes & seconds.

Lines of longitude go north/south from 0° to 180°, meet at the poles and measure distance east/west from the Prime Meridian (Greenwich, England).

Lines of latitude go east/west from 0° to 90°, are parallel to each other and measure distance north/south from the Equator.

Example: my boat is located in South Beach Harbor, San Francisco, California at
37° 46' 47.5” N
122° 23' 16.2 ” W

Which means it's about 38° north of the equator and 122° west of the Prime Meridian.

Sydney, Austrailia is 33° 52' S and 151° 13' E.

Hope this helps.

Using Latitude And Longitude

There are two ways that complement each other. The first is to use a map that contains the latitude and longitude grid lines. DeLorme's gazeteers are excellent for this if you go by paper. Most mapping programmes also handle this as well. The intersection of the latitude line (running east-west) and the longitude line (running north-south) is your location.

The second way is by using the Global Positioning System. For anywhere from $100 to $1000, you can purchase a GPS receiver. Simply enter the latitude and longitude into the GPS unit, and it will tell you how far away you are and which direction to go in order to reach the location.

Hope that helps.
