how can a team like USA be ranked 5Th in world rankings when they face teams that are ranked above 80Th for their world cup qualifying in the CONCACAF, cause i know if they were to try and qualify vs teams in europe they most likely not even come close of qualifying...what is with this world ranking crap....

I'm guessing it's because of points scored. but as you can imagine, it would be a lot easier to score points in the concacaf than in europe or s. america, let's face it, they're up againsat teams like jamaica & T&T... pmsl
EDIT: to be fair to the USA, they held italy (currently doing pretty well) to a draw despite being man down compared to italy. Goes to show that when they have the fire in their belly they can suprise a few people.

The rankings do not have much bearing on reality, no. In one of FIFA's (only?) smarter moves, they've already stated they will change the way the rankings are computed.
The WC seedings did make a bit more sense - part FIFA ranking, part past WC play.
The US did have a bad Cup, no doubt, but both France and Italy struggled to escape their groups...if a ball had bounced the other way once or twice, who knows? The best teams find a way to use the luck that comes their way, but that does not mean that other teams, such as the US, South Korea, or Poland are bad, just a bit unlucky and not one of the best teams.
There are 6 or so consistently top teams in the world, and then many inconsistently good teams, of which the US is just one. It has been great to see improvement from the US over the last 3 or 4 WCs, and hopefully with a new coach they'll be able to push past their current plateau. If you look around the world at the teams competing in the WC at the same level as the US since 1990, the US is not far out of the top 10 nations.

I can't understand that either. How can U.S. be ranked higher than Italy, England, Germany, France, Argentina just to name a few. This is totally pathetic. I have nothing against U.S. but they are not as good as any of those teams. The ranking in this case doesn't make sense. As you can clearly see in the World Cup U.S. were nowhere near the class the other world class teams have showed yet they're ranked higher.
And I ain't saying this 'cause I hate U.S. (like that stupid guy said above - not all hate U.S. - grow up)

How can any team be ranked when most games end with a score of 1-0 decided on a penalty kick?

It's done by computer, there are typically errors. Our rating actually went up after we lost to Jamaica for some reason. The team we beat out for the north american/caribbean title (Mexico) was ranked even higher (4th). I think most long time soccer fans know not to pay attention to fifa's ratings. The seedings in the tournament are more accurate, we were apparently seeded between 17th - 32nd.

Well you answered your own question,they play teams in the concacaf like costa rica elsalvador and jamaica and teams like Ireland miss out in Eroupe because they have teams like france swiss etc to beat,so it,s not the best 32 teams in the world that get there.It,s all done in regions so teams like usa have a chance to qualify.

FIFA are idiots. The ranking system makes no sense. Hell, who decided we must hold World Cups only every four years...we have jet travel now, this is not 1930.
You can still make it "special" but why not every two and scrap the continental tournaments,
