my friend sometimes shows up with bruises at school but always has an excuse. She also seems really subdued and tends to stay away from things like hugs and what not.

You answered your own question -- frequent bruises and emotional withdrawal are the two key signs. This sounds like a case for Child Protective Services in your area. They can investigate and find out if it's abuse.

have a talk w/ her in private. in my opinion, a lot of kids are abused but some are minor, they only leave bruises that fade but theyre not emotionally harmed. others are abused on the outside rather harshly & theyre also emotionaly abused since theyre feeling unloved. there is many types of abuse such as verbal abuse but theyre all harmful. talk to ur friend in private but dont do anything lyk report to the police since she might not want u 2...
