You can find out easily enough. If the letter is from the IRS it will have all the T's crossed and the I's dotted. You can be charged taxes for cigarettes bought on line. I know that where I live the state receives a letter about every purchased made on the net and they can make you pay for the state taxes due them. If I were you I wouldn't ignore the letter. Find out all you can. Call the IRS and find out if the letter was from them and what to do if it wasn't.

Check into it... do not ignore it because a few years back, the IRS did begin to send letters to people who bought cigarettes on line and did not pay taxes for them. Just be absolutely sure the letter did come from the IRS.

Just to be safe, I'd check with a tax lawyer. I know that the IRS is keeping closer track of on-line purchases, even small ones.

When it comes to the IRS, it's better safe than sorry.

Sounds like a scam... unless you bought a tractor-trailer sized container of cigarettes that is.
The IRS couldn't care less about a couple of cartons of smokes...
