Its just Corzine bullying the rest of the government so he gets his way. He was supposed to be a good businessman but drawing a line in the sand and pulling this ultimatum is ridiculous and embarassing.

Its bad enough the government is shut down, but to shutter the casinos (for gaming) and parks and state beaches is absolute insanity. The gaming industry brings in over $1 million dollars a day in revenue to the state, and that is exclusive of the sales tax generated by restaurants and other businesses in Atlantic City.

Many of the taxes and fees he is depending on getting during this period are guaranteed, the lost tourism tax dollars are not. The whole city of Atlactic City loses their share of the sales taxes, room taxes, parking taxes, because people are not going to AC for the boardwalk and salt water taffy.

The whole government should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this to happen, even though its a show because this week is broken up by the holiday so not too many employees are suffering, besides they get their back pay when this is all over. Corzine and the democrats in the statehouse must be planning on fixing this by this weekend or they will need to add a bailout package for Atlantic City to the budget.

The democrats are upset at Corzine because they planned putting the higher sales tax on as part of property tax relief, now they have to come up with another election year gimic.

Here's a good start at cutting the deficit: eliminate the Homestead Rebate. People no longer need an incentive to move here, its too crowded.

NOt only should it be shut down, they should all be in jail. NJ needs a complete overhaul of government. They are the most corrupt state leaders in the entire US. The gangsters sure went "ligit" , they took seats on every money sucking chair the government offices had available. The tolls are a scam, the taxes are a scam. Everything in NJ is some sort of shake down. They make so much money but yet so much of it is complete crap! it's a dump.

NJ is like a miserly old man who has billions of dollars in the bank but always wants more and more, he lives in complete $hit, everything is old, or off the garbage, nothing is ever fixed, and when it is, it is a half A** attempt and his house looks and smells like a land fill. But all he wants is more money to add to his stockpile that you have to wonder what he could possibly be doing with it. It's hard to make it there, it is a land of slum lords and low quality of life that people just barely deal with because they are immune from being stolen from and victimized constantly, they don't even notice anymore.
and I should know, I'm from there!!!!!

I don't keep up with NJ politics. I know there is a shut down but beyond that I don't know what is going on. But I did notice that the casinos are shut down. That is stupid in my opinion. How can you complain about not having enough money then cut off a source of tax revenue?

The state is unable to ratify a new budget which means the state cannot legally spend money. If the state cannot spend money then it's forced to shut down because it can no longer legally pay all of its employees.

If you recall, in the 90's, the US Government shut down because Congress couldn't ratify a budget. If a government can't spend money then it can't function and must shut down.

Like any business, the states must run on a budget. When there is no budget then there is no income to the state to cover the expenses and therefore the money that is generated can not be administered in a responsible manner. This would lead to waste and fraud potential.

Your governor has issued an ultimatum to the legislature. He's making a point about how not having a decent budget is the same as having no government at all.

But you're right, he's cutting off the money flow to spite the legislature, and that's unwise.

Isn't the majority NJ gov't controlled by democrats? The real question is how the NJ gov't got to this point? Who's been spending more than they have? Are their one too many failing social programs created by a democratic majority?
