I've heard that Wednesdays around midnight is the best time to purchase, but I don't know for sure.

I'm not sure if there is a best time to purchase tickets, but the dates of travel can be important. Try to avoid departures and returns on weekends.

These are very good sites: www.cheaptravelnetwork.com, www.travelocity.com, www.orbitz.com, www.priceline.com, www.qixo.com, www.kayak.com, www.cheaptickets.com, www.expedia.com, www.hotwire.com, www.cheapflights.com, www.mobissimo.com, www.farechase.com, www.sidestep.com, www.globester.com

Good luck!

It varies by the airline and they will change prices on you mid-exploration sometimes. I suggest my methods of flying cheap. I have perfected it over the years since I always seem to need to go somewhere.

First book as far in advance as you can (about a month or slightly more). If this is not an option go for this route.

Enroll in each airlines discount booking email programs. Remember that certain airlines operate more in certain cities. Example: Atlanta- Delta, Houston- American Airlines, Phoenix- Southwest. This doesn't mean that you must book through them...it does mean that you won't get a cheap flight on US Air to Dallas often. Learn that certain cities are cheaper certain times of the year----Orlando in the summer.....

Now that you have that and you have signed up for the emails....join the frequent flyer clubs. I strongly suggest picking the one or two airlines that focus on the cities that you like. If you like going to NYC, don't use southwest airline for example.

Next, get comfortable checking out the primary airline sites like americanairlines.com versus priceline.com or cheapfares.com. The reason....just because they say they are the cheapest doesn't mean they are.

Next, try going to priceline.com and bidding for a ticket. This means check out the prices for a particular city you want to go to...see all the prices. Not all airlines use this website by the way. Then note the name your own price section....if you are serious and the prices aren't too bad, then offer 30% less than the cheapest fair. Remember that you can't pick the time that you want but it will be close.

Small things to help:
1. Try to give a window of acceptable days that you will fly.
2. Leave on Saturdays and come back on Mondays or Tuesdays.
3. Cheaper flights are less desirable times. 7am is popular to go somewhere, 6pm is popular to leave....get the picture?
4. If you are looking well in advance...like for this Xmas...then check now and then check in a month. Why? The fares do vary and once a price war starts the fares will drop.

I know this is a long answer...but once you get the big picture, you will know how everyone flies cheap. I fly for fun or free at least 8-10 times /year. It can save you lots of money.

One last thing. If you want to go to Las Vegas or Orlando...or a big resort spot....try going to the website that promotes these places. Example: Southwest and Delta have last minute escapes that include airfare and hotel. These can be cheap.

Goodluck, I hope to see you on a plane sometime soon.

There is no specific time. Always try to book as early in advance as you can. Go to places like orbitz.com, priceline.com, or hotwire.com. I highly recommend priceline.com b/c you can name your own price. I did this a month ago for a trip I am taking in august I saved about 40% on my airline tickets.

All airlines change thier rates so frequently .
I am a travel agent and have found they will usually update their prices by 11:00am daily if there are any changes.

Wednesdays are cheaper. I don't know why, but they are. Just remember to also book at leas three weeks in advance or you'll pay too much.
