From a practical usage standpoint......

Butane & propane have very similar BTU contents. Either can be used to run a cookstove, heater, boiler, etc.

For *standard* residential & commercial usage, butane is no longer used and rarely available - propane is what is used in today's marketplace.

The market shifted to propane because butane ceases to produce vapor (the stuff used in appliances) @ about 40 degrees F. This meant that the tank in most North American & European climates would either have to be buried OR have a pilot light under the tank to keep it warm :O)

Propane, on the other hand, continues to create vapor until about - 40 F making for a more stable & usable supply in a more economical aboveground installation, without the hazards of lighting a fire under it ;o)

Butane has 1 more carbon atom than propane and 2 more hydrogen atoms. Propane is C3H8 whereas Butane is C4H10 (the numbers are supposed to be in subscript).

propane has 3 carbons and butane has 4 carbons.
propane's heat level < butane's heat level
weight of propane < weight of butane
propane= C3H8
butane =C4H10

Butane is a 4-carbon compound, and propane is a 3-carbon compound.

Butane = CH3-CH2-CH2-CH3 (C4H10)
Propane = CH3-CH2-CH3 (C3H8)

Both are flammable, but butane has a lower flash point (i.e. it is more flammable than propane).

butane and propane are both organic compounds with different number of carbons in their structures, the difference if i am corrrect is just one carbon. the other differences are secondary from, temperature tolerace to the functions
