It's probably algae. You need to test the water...kits available at a pool store...or some pool stores charge you a fee to test it for you.
Depending on the test results depends on what you need to do.

First, use your pool scrubber and rub down all the sides and floor of the pool as best you can. Next, back wash your filter, and clean out all your traps. Then, in the evening, either shock or use liquid chlorine (the latter will work faster). Sunlight tends to diminish the effectiveness of chlorine. Depending on the size of your pool, this could be between 5-8 gallons. Next, use a clarifyer (it binds with the dead algae making it easier to catch in your filter). Do a pH test on your pool to see if you need to add acid. After a day, backwash again. Do another pH test. You should start to see some improvement.
If you have a Barracuda (or similar device), this will help keep algae from adhering to the pool floor. In addition, add another trap that attaches to the hose. This will take off some of the burden on the trap next to your pump. Good Luck~

What are the chemical readings? How long are you running the pump per day? What type of filter do you have? One (or more) of these answers holds the key to your question. But a bit more information is required before we can help. Green water does not always mean algae!

If you're not comfortable with using test strips and adding chemicals based on those results my recommendation would be to take a sample of your water to the local pool supply shop. They can analyze it on the spot and give you the proper chems to get the green out. That always seems to work for me and my father-in-law.

you have algae..drain it ..scrub the sides (i know too much work...but if you have a pool..ya gotta work to keep it up) test your chlorine levels EVERY day. Sunshine make chlorine disappear. I add chlorine to mine every other day (along with a "shock and swim")
Good luck...

You have too much algae. Time for a chlorine or bromine shock.
