When a team signs someone, they sign them for a certain amount and a certain length. When the contract is over, they have the first "dibs" on the player, if they want to resign them or not. This is their option. If they choose to resign the player, they are exercising their option.

Depending on the way the contract is written, some players have the option of terminating their contract early so that they can become a free agent. Some contracts give more power to the player with options as well as "no trade" clauses. Kobe has both of these and can be a free agent next month and work out a new long term contract while he is still young enough to be worth more and also before the new collective bargaining agreement is done. The team option is similar, but is more up to the team or some contracts have minimum criteria the player mush meet to guarantee the last year or 2 of a contract.
