He's applying for grad school, and he doesn't want anything to affect his chances to get in...! He was on his way to a baseball game walking with an open beer bottle (I know, not very smart). Beside the $50.00 fine, will there be other consequences? Thank you.

yup, its going to be on his record, unless he gets the fine paid off, and see if there is some way that he can get it expunged, so when he goes to pay the fine, and make sure you go enough money for the fees and fine. usually they tax extra, so pay it all up and ask the clerk of court if he is able to get it expunged. Sometimes you can, sometimes you can't.

You don't say whether he got a ticket, which should be the case, or went to jail. Either way, it's probably a misdemeanor at most. He can contact the court and see when and if he can get it expunged. If he's successful he does not have to reveal it as a conviction, however, if asked if he was ever arrested, he must reply yes, even if the record was expunged. Also check and see exactly what they convicted him of. The D.A. may have reduced it to some other charge, although this is pretty low already.

It'll probably go on his record. I think it's more like a parking ticket...you get the fine but other than that nothing really happens unless you don't pay it. The ordinance also varies by state so you might want to look up the state's stance on the open container ordinance. He should be fine though.

It would be bizarre if his school conducted a super thorough background check that would reveal a laughably minor offense--unless he has other brushes with the law in his past. I do not think schools go this far in judging their candidates.

However, there is a slight chance it may be a factor when he applies for a job--especially one that is high profile or for sensitive work involving law enforcement or national defense.

He needs to check to see if it will go on his record, or if he can do community service and have it taken off. He needs to be more aware of his actions if he needs to have a spotless record, but people do make mistakes.

I doubt very seriously it will affect his admission to grad school. Don't sweat that.

Depending on what state you are in, it is a misdemeanor in Ohio and they do not show up in criminal background checks for both the BCI and FBI checks
