Well your question is SOOOO wrong for a start, they are called third world countries because they are in poverty, and they are in poverty because of a corrupt govenment system. Many years ago, people gave money to these countries to help their poor, yet the govenment spent it on the rich, finally people wised up to what was happening and decided to do it themselves rather than entrusting the govenments of that country. Plus it could also be the fact that crops wont grow because of the heat, floods etc. Then there is the fact that third world countries down get a fair price for their crops which is why fair-trade products have been introduced, so we know that if we buy a product that is fair-trade, these people are getting a fair price for their crops and are not being ripped off.

Plus there is also the fact that families can not send their children to school to better themselves because they need their children to go out and earn money so they can feed the family. Which is ensuring that they don't better themselves and can't get jobs they deserve at a pay they deserve.

Sadly we in the west have contributed to third world poverty over the years by sucking resources out of them and giving little back, by imposing our governments for our own economic reasons, not theirs.
You can also add that many countries that are now prosperous were once in some kind of poverty based on the lack of resources in their country. Trade helped things along.
Bad goverments often work to keep themselves and a ruling eliteinpower at the total cost to the masses. And of course, wars totally mess up the stability of a place.

Bare with me as I attempt to answer this question without berating you for the idiocy of it...

The term, "Third World Country" relates directly to poverty. Countries that are suffering from poverty are termed "Third World." They're poor by definition.

what the heck... ok for one the term "third world' is degrading in iteself.. and they're are in poverty because that's what third world means... if they were a little bit richer they would be second world which include Russia, some African, South American, and Central American countries... and if they were extremely rich, had a good economy and militia they would be first world which emcompasses the U.S., Canada, most of Europe, Australia, and questionably China.

And by the way many of those countries are in povery because first world countries provide no help, not corruption and bad people.

Anway, the term third would makes it sound as if the people that live in those countries aren't as good as those in first and second... it's one of my pet-peeves.

The West was in the vanguard of the Industrial Revolution and became so economically powerful it was able to invade and exploit nations that were not. Colonization established the so-called Third World of less powerful populations. Colonial regimes did not adequately prepare native people for independence and, when it came, continued to exploit them. Ultimately individual rulers of the new nations adopted similarly calloused methods to make themselves rich while impoverishing their countries. The Third World is poor because of its historic relationships.

As for the problem with your question...substitute "it" for "the" and people will stop being snotty about it.

look up Eduardo Galeano and read some of his work. He describes it pretty well, even though that history is complex stuff.
