Contrary to most of the answers here so far, some parts of the SAT are actually EASIER than the GED.
The SAT I: Reasoning test is a college aptitude test required by most private schools in the US, and most of the East Coast schools. The other college aptitude test, the ACT, is required by most of the Midwest schools and a number of state schools. Many places will take either, but some only take one or the other, so find out which one the colleges you want to attend require. Some colleges also require some SAT II Subject Tests, which are tests in individual subjects (chemistry, writing, literature, mathematics with or without a calculator, etc.), in addition to the SAT I: Reasoning test.
The math in the SAT is basic algebra and geometry, so it should be things you learned in ninth or tenth grade. The vocabulary is more difficult, but most should be familiar to you. (Of course, the test is built around the harder words, but still . . .) The object of the test is to measure how well you reason through problems (both mathematic and linguistic), rather than "do you know these facts?".
The GED is test you take if you did not graduate from high school but you want to get a diploma equivalent. The GED is designed to test how much you know about various high school subjects, so is "hard" in the sense that you need to have the correct vocabulary for each subject. The math is also a bit harder than the math in the SAT.

The SAT, which doesn't actually stand for anything, is a college admissions test. The GED is a test for a high school diploma. If you are applying to college, and you don't have a high school diploma, you will need to take the GED. The SAT is required for all students at nearly all colleges. I can't tell you how hard it is, since I haven't taken the GED, but it's a reasoning test, not an actual test that tests your education, so it depends on each person.

Well I have taken the ACT, which is like the SAT, and the ACT is an all around better test. GED is a test you could probably take in the 9th grade and pass with flying colors. It doesn't look really good on resumes, and is associated with high school dropouts.
