I agree -- the b.s. on television is nauseating -- I've never seen a person act that way in real life unless they were also mentally unstable or trying to imitate the television.

Why don't you want us to advertise? Wouldn't you rather know that we were gay? Don't you think we deserve to able to identify each other? 'Advertisement' - what a crazy way to describe campness.

I just can't help it. I work with homophobic people so I try my best to disguise it, but even when I try to tone it down I can't! I've always been like it, since long before I was remotely sexually aware in any way.

I just love FABULOUS things and showing off (maybe in some people it is a result of repression?!).

But you should realise that 'camp' is not the same thing as 'gay'; camp is a whole sense of humour and style that plenty of heterosexuals can indulge in too. Don't assume a camp man is gay.

Calling them "Gays" is actually the answer to your question. A long time ago we called another group of different people "Blacks" (or worse). The biased treatment and resulting oppression caused the "Preacher's daughter" effect (where a preachers daughter is so protected as a child that she becomes a nympho or clepto when she finally leaves home). African-Americans began acting "extra black," wearing African garbs or talking in extra "ghetto" accents.
The bias and hatred shown towards people for being homosexual is no different. in response, they now work extra hard to be gay and let you know it. Psychologically I don't know the term for this, but it's a very natural reaction.
Add to that the fact that the same biological differences that make one more likely to be gay also make a person more emotional and flamboyant (the drama queen gene) and you have the proverbial "flaming homosexual."
To sum up... gays act so gay because straights made fun of them to start with. It's our own fault.

Camp is a time-honored tradition in Gay culture. Camp exists on many levels in language, dress and lifestyle. Camp can be a lot of fun! Normally we (Gays) only "camp it up" amongst ourselves, but some braver souls like to get really campy in public and be really "in your face" to make non-Gays accept the fact that we do exist. It's easy to be an invisible homosexual. It's much harder to put yourself out there and be publicly Gay.

If you don't understand camp (like the guy who posed this question), then just ignore it. Do you have the same objection to African-Americans speaking jive? Does it bother you for Jewish people to use humorous Yiddish terms in their language? People are different and communicate in different ways. It's part of what keeps life interesting. Listen to the camp and maybe you'll learn something new and fun.

The more you learn about something different from your norm, the less you have to fear from it.

Because some Gay men feel the need to conform to societies expectations of them. Also it is not just Gay men that put on a camp act one of my best friends is a man-whore but acts very camp.

Concepts that define what is considered masculine or feminine are culturally determined. Were it not for the social pressure to conform, an individual might easily choose to behave in ways that do not agree with the cultural expectations of her gender. All human beings exist along a spectrum of gender identification and sexual orientation. Quite simply, some gay people behave in ways that are defined as masculine...and some don't. However, one will also observe the same in the heterosexual population. Some "straight" men behave in ways that are culturally defined as feminine. What is unfortunate is the extent to which cultural conditioning can make many of us squirm when we encounter someone who doesn't "play according to our rules."
