you have a couple of options.
1. if your car's streo has a line-in or an AUX jack, then just get a stereo-to-stereo wire and connect one end to your ipod's headphone jack and the other to the line-in/AUX jack, this will give you the best sounding connection.

2. if your stereo is an older model, and came equipped with a tape deck, you can get a cassette adapter. put the adapter into your tape deck, and connect the wire to your ipod's headphone jack.

3. if your car's stereo has a dvd player with rca jacks on the front, you can buy apple's a/v out cable, and then match the colors of the plugs to the colors of the jacks, and plug the other end into your ipod.

4. the most used method these days, however, is through the use of a FM transmitter (like griffin's itrip, or belkin's tunecast) these all work the same way, by taking your ipod's sound and broadcasting it to a set fm frequency, which you then tune your radio to. It's going to be hit-or-miss with these depending on where you live, and what radio stations you have in your area.
If you live near a lot of colleges, then this option may prove to be troublesome for you because, in my experience, these work best on the lower frequencies, which is also where you find most college radio stations. Also, having a cell phone in the car, and using it in close proximity to the ipod with an fm transmitter on it can cause interference as well.

If you think that this is the option you're going to go with, I recommend you go with one of the models which are powered by 12V dc(through your car's lighter) because the signal will be somewhat stronger, and many of these models also charge your ipod.

5. The last option which is also the best, and most expensive option is by using either the drive+play from Harman Kardon, or the icruze from Monster. These units need to be professionally installed, but will give you great sound, plus remote control of your ipod's functions(skip, ff, rew) , as well as charging your ipod simultaneously.

It's great to be able to listen to my IPOD in the car. I bought an FM converter which has a built in charger also and it's an endless charge. I bought it at FYE but I am sure you can get one at any electronics store. This was my second one purchased and is better than the first. Make sure you get one that plugs directly into your cigarette lighter and has the charger built into it. This way you can listen and don't have to worry about having to charge the IPOD either. The one I have is made my Maxell and I do recommend it. I am sure there are many brands out there, but I do, from experience, suggest the Maxell. I have used it and have had no porblems at all with it. Like I said, it plugs directly into the cigarette lighter and holds and charges the IPOD at the same time. No wires to worry about.
