RE: NOTRE DAME CATHEDRAL IN PARIS, FRANCE - it is so old & so large - in the early history, did people come into the cathedral on horseback for meetings / functions, rather than walking in & being seated? I was under the impression that there were no seats inside in the past.
*** if anyone knows where i can find the answer, please help. -- thanx - pina b

It is true that there were no pews because back in the day it was basically a law that one had to be pious and the option of sitting and relaxing whilst hearing the sermon wasn't allowed. It was thought that it made the mind lazy, that people wouldn't pay attention, and the message wouldn't get across. Think about it, we had pews in the church I went to as a child and my grandfather's favorite part of sermon was the bit where he could sit and snooze as the pastor droned on. That wouldn't have been possible if there weren't any pews. About the horses, I don't know. I can't imagine them allowing beasts of burden in the house of their lord but I wasn't there then so I don't really know.

None of the old cathedrals had seating. People usually stood during the services. Even after seating was added it was and still is removable in most cases. The insides of the churches were used for many things besides services. They were generally the only gathering places in the towns.
Also, because many people couldn't read and write, the stories of the Bible were taught be drama cycles with different stories in little vignettes all around the church. This was the rebirth of drama after the dark ages.

I don't know about the horses, but its likely. Donkeys and other animal would have been part of the plays.
