Like all great sports traditions, the 7th inning stretch has many stories surrounding it's origin.

The one I know is:
In the early days of baseball all games were 7 innings long, much like junior baseball is today. As the 1900's approached baseball's owners, in an attempt to increase attendance, decided that games should be 9 innings long. However they didn't tell the fans this until later in one season.

With the home team in the leade, some people were getting up in the middle of the 7th inning to go home because they assumed the game was over and that is how the tradition started according to this story.

The actual origin we may never know, however It has been attributed to a President of the US, to Kenneshaw Mountain Landis, Commissioner of Baseball for some 15 or more years to a broadcaster here in Chicago and many other things, however it's actual origin remains a mystery.

On July 3rd 1874, Carl Utekker and Ron Gutstretch were yawning rather loudly during the seventh inning of the Brooklyn Dodger and St. Petersburg bulls baseball game and were both ejected.

When they returned the next day - coincidentally during the seventh inning, both of them stretched their arms at the umpires
and gave them the "finger".

When they returned the next day they were both awarded with the seventh-inning stretch.

The seventh-inning stretch has been a documented phenomenon since 1869 and has no finite origin.
