I think bowls are named for their shape, not their function ;)

It used to be a bowl once. People would sit on them and do there business, just like we would today with a toilet. Also it contains things so it must be a bowl unless you want to call it the Toilet Basin. LOL

Hey, but haven't you heard that in Japan they have that restaurant which serves food in toilet bowls and people actually sit on toilets to eat? That's funny.
