About every six months says my mother. It depends on the make and how old it is but I do it when the ice starts to take over and there's no room.

I've been threatening to do mine for about 2 months!
The only thing I can store in my freezer at the moment is the ice coating every surface - including the front of the drawers!
Don't leave it as long as I did, if I'd done it when it first needed it it would have been easy.......now it's going to be a nightmare!! me own fault :o(

Quote Tucsondude - "Every month or before the frost gets 1 inch thick. After that it starts to stress the motor and could lead to premature failure."
Unless it has an automatic defrost feature! ;-)

Whenever it needs it. When it is new that should be about twice a year but as it gets older it will need doing more often.
If you can't get food in because of the ice it needs doing. It will run more efficiently after defrosting so saves you money.
Hope that helps.

well u should buy a frostfree one! if the ice gets to thick it acts as an insulator thus tricking the thermostat into thinking it is warmer than it actually is (its warm inside an igloo) so the compressor will keep running which will cost you more in electricity
