Apply other eye makeup before adding liner and mascara. Ensure that you have a good mirror and lighting so that you can see what you are doing. Use a steady hand to apply eyeliner. Draw a line from the inner corner of the eyelid to the outer corner in one fluid stroke keeping to the natural curvature of the eyelid. You can keep the line thin and even across the eyelid or thicken the line in the outer end of the eyelid. Draw a line across your upper eyelid just above the lashes. Start from the inside corner to the outer end. Lining the lower lids is a matter of choice. Also line the lids based on your eye shape. You can apply the eyeliner as a line on a larger part of the lower lid. You can gently smudge the line for a smoky and smoldering effect. Stopping your eyeliner at the corner of the eyes will make them appear round and wide. Sweeping the line a little longer will lend a more exotic look. Smudge the edges for a more natural effect. Some women prefer to paint a few dots along the lash line on the top lids. Then you can join them to form a continuous line.
If you have a larger eyelid area, you can go in for thicker and softer eyeliner. Choose thin and intense eyeliner if you have small eyelid area. Avoid thick eyeliner for small or close-set eyes. For wide set eyes, emphasize the inner corners of the eyes. For close set eyes, emphasize the outer corners, keeping the inner corners highlighted. For drooping eyes, turn the outer end of the liner in an upward direction. Eyeliner should be applied close to the base of the eyelashes. Apply the eyeliner as close to the lash line as possible. Else you are likely to land up with a ghost line or strip of skin between your liner and lash line. This takes away from the effect of fuller lashes. It is not advisable to apply eyeliner in the rim of the eye. This would probably result in dark specks in the eye and appear unsightly. The eye is also likely to get irritated.
- If you are just learning how to apply eyeliner, you may find it easier to sit at a table with a standing mirror in front of you.
- Alternatively, lay a mirror down on a table so you can look down into it.
- Rest your elbow on the table to prevent shaking while applying eyeliner.
- A sure, quick stroke is far easier than a slow and seemingly controlled one.

1. Get in front of a mirror (don't use your pressed powder or blush etc mirror, you need both hands when you first start.
2. With one hand gently close the eyelid you're going to apply the liner to.
3. With your other hand grab the brush or pen with the liquid eyeliner or the pencil.
4. Slowly make short lines overlapping eachother as you make your way towards the outter edge of your eyelid. Never try to make a line all at once, it rarely comes out right.

The idea of eyeliner is to make you lashline look thicker. So it's best to use a very pointy pencil or a brush that is angled when applying a powder liner or cream. It's also good to pull you eye lid a little at the corner - it helps to pull the skin on your eyelid more taught which allows an easier, more fine line. Also - start at the inside corner and work outward.

Get a good quality liquid eyeliner, I like Lancome Traceur-matic. Have your eyeshadow on first, no mascara as prickly eyelashes can get in the way. Lean on a stable surface with your elbow steady and slowly move the brush from the outside of you eye in. This is where the good quality stuff has the advantage as you are more able to control the brush. If its not dramatic enough for you then go over it again. Eye pencils are best kept for the lower lashes I think.
Practice does make perfect I can do my eyliner easier than my lipstick now!

Depending on if your using liquid or pencil it can be different with pencil an easy way of doing it is puutting dots along your lash line
and connecting them up.
If you feel the need to make it look smokey smudge using a cotton bud.
Liquid is a little harder but practice makes perfect just start out with a thin layer on your lash line and build up from there.
The best eyeliners are Onyx eyeliner by benefit or i-writer by ruby and millie.

It's not impossible and you don't neccessarily need to have a steady hand to put eyeliner. The easiest trick in the book: draw three dots on your upper eyelid: one at each corner and one in the middle, then trace a line between all of them to join them together. Think of it as connecting the dots!

***THIS IS THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION***
instead of atempting to draw a line, (which can be near impossible if your hands are shaky or your just crap at drawing straight lines), with the end of your chosen eyeliner, dot on a series of small dots, right next to each other over the whole length (or as far as you want to go) over the upper eyelashes. If the dots are small and really close to each other (overlapping) it will give the appearance of a line. Try it it really does work.
Good luck

Go to a make up counter and ask a professional to do it and show you....
These answers are great, but if you are like me, a visual learner, then your best bet would be to go see how it's done.
Clinique, MAC, etc. offer free demo's all the time. Just pop in and ask someone how to do it.
Not only will they show you, if you get someone nice, they will tell you what colors look good on your skin as well. This way, you get a lesson on how to put eyeliner on and a color consultation!
It's better than poking your eye out! :)

One good way is to use liquid eyeliner. Take a piece of paper and cut it small, then lay it across your eye to the thickness you want the line, then apply the eyeliner. Remove the paper and you have a perfect line!
