The artists make money? I thought it was the record companies that made most of the money and the artists get a small proportion unless they are already big stars and have their lawyers and agents negotiate a sweet deal. Filesharing downloads are not illegal in all countries (for instance I think its legal in Canada), and furthermore you can try other "pay for" sites other than itunes.

allofmp3.com is one of those, they don't apply DRM to their download files and have an enormous catalog of music. The BPI is planning on suing them as they don't believe that allofmp3 is operating legally, but allofmp3 say different. Laws are not the same in every country!

Simply put...
Piracy is really hurting the recording artists and studios so they try to sell CD's at a reasonable rate. Usually song downloads are cheaper than buying the CD (99 cents a song $11 for an album). If you are paying more than that, get iTunes. I've never seen a song for more than $0.99.

I wouldn't mind the price of them but I think mp3 is a crap format, and I'm not interested in downloading anything that I can't then transfer to another PC.
And I can't see them reducing the price of legal music downloads, as the record company wants a bigger cut of the profits than they give to the artist.

99 cents for a song is expensive? Probably because they are copywritten and the artists want to make as much money as they can.
