Great subject. I've always thought that students should wear uniforms, but with a minor bit of flexibility. Kids will hate it, but it makes sense on so many levels.

The pros:

- Less costly for parents and students
- No clothing "competition" among students
- Less distractions or dress code violations
- Teaches kids to see beyond the clothing to the person's character.
- Encourages concentration on education and less on social activities.

Cons:

- Kids will whine and complain because they can't emulate the latest rapper or skank they see on MTV.

- They'll complain about lack of individuality, but they forget that they also complain about cliques and not feeling "part of the group".

There are a myriad of studies that say why this is a good idea, yet schools resist it for reasons that escape me.

I'm a teacher and I taught in both worlds, with and without uniforms. I think both have pros and cons, but I'm starting to prefer uniforms, when I didn't before. Here are my thoughts for both point of views.

First, a lot of people mention that uniforms make the students equal, and there is less pressure to be cool. That is not true. Coolness doesn't have to be asserted through clothing. Kids will still wear jewelry, different shoes, the way their hair is cut/styled. Don't be fooled, cool kids stand out just as much as the uncool ones.

This is also an argument for the indivduality issue. Sure the kids cannot show their personality through their clothes, but they CAN show it through their accessories and through their behavior. You can still show who you are by the way you speak, by the people you hang out with, by the food you eat, by the books you read, by the music you listen to, by the movies and TV shows you watch. And when you are in a classroom, showing your personality should not be your first priority, learning is.

Right now we are facing the issue of girls showing more skin than is appropriate for a classroom setting. Students wearing uniforms teaches them that you cannot dress the way you want everywhere. I told my students this year that they shouldn't feel punished to wear a uniform, as there are many jobs that require it: policmen, postmen, nurses, etc. It teaches them that casual clothing is not to be worn everywhere, and that sometimes it's inappropriate. And I think that is an important issue these days, when you see kids wearing jeans at a wedding.

I hope I'm not too confused! I'm basically for uniforms, but I understand and agree with many of the arguments against it.

All public schools in Australia have an individual school uniform, though the levels of uniform enforcement vary tremendously from school to school. Enforcement can reach down to the more personal level of appropriate jewerly/hair bands as part of the dress code. On balance I see this as a positive.

i think that in america, the reason we're getting a 50% dropout rate is partially due to the lack of a school uniform.

at american public schools, everyone wears what they pleases, and the cooler your clothes are (the more expensive, etc.), the cooler you are. public schools here are a popularity contest. with a school uniform, i'm convinced that many more students are more likely to study.

however, you can't just ignore the fact that even though you may have a school uniform, kids may still be as inclined to get into drugs and girls are still just as likely to get pregnant.

school uniform doesn't exactly have a huge impact, but i think it helps some populations nonetheless.

Well, here are the things why people made up uniforms:
-because children won't make difference in who's richer and who's poorer
MY ANSWER: Children WILL make difference in social status no metter the uniforms
-because you can see who is from which school
MY ANSWER: Why don't just ASK "which school are you from"?!?!?!
-because it's tidy
MY ANSWER: Normal clothes can look tidy and also uniforms can look untidy!

So, in conclusion I personally think that clothes are a way to show your uniqness and every way of providing children a way to be the same as everyone else ins, for me, BAD!

Hope I helped!

As long as students have a choice and don't have to feel uncomfortable. My school wears uniform and collars are required. I hate collars. I feel awful in them.

Dress code is also bad for learning too because teachers have to be focused on who's wearing dresscode or not and if a student's out of dresscode they can be removed from class. Is that helping?

But there are benefits. Only I feel more against it.

Now that i am out of school and working, I think uniforms would do the children some good. Its alot of pressure to have to keep up with the "cool kids" With uniforms kids wouldnt get picked on as much. If I was a kid in School I would be totaly agenst! It was fun picking out "first day of school clothes"

In Florida, students & parents have been fighting the change for years. They lost & uniforms have been implemented this year. I wish it hadn't passed because it is so hot here & I don't see what's wrong with wearing shorts & sandals to school when it's a 100 degrees in the shade.

School uniforms create a safe environment, it is easier to identify who is and who is not part of the student body. Also it provides a sense of uniformity among students, which is very helpful to develop academic skills in the lower grades. In the other hand it helps households to save money in clothes.
