younger people!?

Question

Okay, I have played piano for, what, 7 years now? but now i want to play bass guitar. I can't tell my parents this, they will freak out and ground me for even mentioning anything other than playing the piano. I HATE THE PIANO! How do I tell them I want to learn before August comes?

Playing the piano is a really useful skill, so when you're a little older, hopefully there will come a time when you'll be glad that your parents forced you to take lessons.

As for playing the bass, which was my first and favorite instrument, I suggest that you explain to your parents that you are willing to continue playing the piano, but you'd also like to diversify your musical repertoire. The bass is useful for many different styles of music, so if they have an issue with rock and roll or punk or whatever style you plan on playing, you can explain to them that you can play bass with a jazz group, or in the school pep band, or whatever. The bass, like the piano, is a useful skill to have, and may come to help you in the future.

Best of luck with the parents thing. My parents were the same way when I was little.

Well when I was 8 I was learning to play the piano then I decided that I didnt like it so I told my mom I didnt want to play anymore, and she was understanding about it. If your parents arent as understanding, just be like "Hey mom,dad, I really want to learn to play the guitar" and dont mention the piano. If they ask what about your piano, just explain why you dont like the piano, or say that youve been playing the piano so long that its no longer challenging or fun and then say that a bass sounds interesting.

save up your allownce, buy one and a book to help you learn, and they wont have to know. practice at a friends house or something. i hope things work out
