Why do people have to believe we are special? - if u don't fair enough, but so many do and cannot accept that on a grander scale we are meaningless

Because we know of nothing else.
And if we are meaningless, what are we meaningless against?
These are two extremes, that we are the best and we are meaningless.
When humans can't make sense of it all, we either think we're right or wrong. Best or meaningless.
Let's just say, we have our own individual purpose.
