Yes, opposite blue on the color wheel is orange,
which is mathmatically and scientifically sound.

Since there are three colors, it would seem the
opposite of one solid color would be an even mixture
of its two counterparts.

Socially? I guess the colors could still be seen
as opposites. The feelings evoked by either are opposite,
blue being more soothing and calming and orange, energetic
and vitalizing.

Blue for uniforms of authority and orange for those punished.

Orange is the opposite color of blue because if you put the three primary colors in a triangle, (blue, red, yellow) then put the three secondary colors in the midst of the primaries, (purple, green, orange) then indeed orange is opposite of blue on the color wheel, Also, all three primary colors mixed together becomes brown, then gray. Orange is red & yellow, so it makes sense orange is opposite of blue.

Actually if you mix a secondary color with a opposite primary you get brown. (some people did not give you correct answers) You could also call this mixing Complimentary colors. Which are blue and orange mixed. Purple and yellow mixed. Red and Green mixed. To create on your palette: First mix: red + yellow = orange Yellow + blue = green red + blue = purple. Then mix these individually as follows: Mix orange with blue. Mix green with red. Mix Purple with yellow. Each of these combinations will give you a different hue of brown. For example: the mix of purple with yellow= a brown that is kinda reddish creamy. a mix of the green and red= a brown that is darker hued and slightly muggy.

What Shamrocks said is wrong. Red and blue make purple, not brown. Red and yellow make orange, yellow and blue makes green. I'm thinking that maybe if you mix all of them together but maybe add more red than the rest of the colors you should get some kind of brown color.

The opposite of blue is orange; if you look at a color wheel orange is directly across from blue.
